Also the cinema Imax on Potsdamer Platz was designed by the partnership Piano-Kohlbecker between 1993 and 1998.
Going out from the shape of the half of a circle, the building of the cinema develops itself along the Marlene-Dietrich-Platz, remarkable by its long curved glass facade, with some metallic structural elements. The facade is actually pulled up by 18 metallic ties. It is situated just next to the Mercedes Center.
This is one of the most interesting buildings in this area, and it’s actually very simply created. The main volume of the construction has a half circle plan, pulled up to 5 levels, creating big internal spaces for cinema rooms. This construction is covered at its top by a huge dome, under which is colocated the projection room for the cinema. And not a simple screen, but a very large one: 550 square meters!
Architects Renzo Piano and Christoph Kohlbecker decided to give the possibility to use this dome to make the projection screen even bigger; we arrive to a surface of 950 square meters!
