The study Lg=mC (Giovanni Lucentini & Marcello Calà) is a small design office (all the work is developed in a room of about 7 square meters. In the same small house when it clears the dining table there are meetings). In this place they were born preliminary projects for international competitions, the study project for the area of Pepla the promenade Durres for the ministry of tourism in Albania and the UN projects with world-renowned artists such as Tanya Preminger, the project for the park’s memory Pizzolungo (who won a world architecture community award), the study design for a settlement of houses floating in Macedonia, the winning design of the competition for the waterfront in Palermo etc..
Describe the work of a study that not has a dimension of studio but little gathering for friends is an easy story. Must invent and imagine how to spend years to survive in a country where you do not have to exist because they do not propose social image comfortable and attractive.
We want to demonstrate with our work to be able to be a small group, which has as its purpose the desire to protect their idea of work, and therefore experiences a condition of isolation in a society like the Italian one where the important thing is appearing. A hierarchical society and antimeritocratica, which has transformed what was once a peasant civilization and artisan and then a nation that lived on design, fashion and tourism society in the most scandalous and unproductive in the Western world. Where has reintroduced the medieval vassalage.
Hence the work of the study with a political vision characterized by a strongly idea of architecture as a social commitment. The objective is to invent a story of places and reality, even if this becomes extremely critical of a society that belies its nature, as well as the message gets to the park Memory Pizzolungo to commemorate a mafia massacre (The direction of the project is the want to build a contrast between a model tranquilizing even a certain antimafia, not wanting to do even after decades cope with complicity sclerotic (..) We do not want to attack Toto Riina with the project but rather a certain culture, so to speak political culture, that masquerades their intentions behind formulas appealing, politically correct, that does not see how one can defeat the mafia system and bourgeois accomplice and consumer services, the growth of the value of work and the role of culture for development economy and the re-establishment of the country. The reality today is the only chance for the turning of a lazy and indolent society: we have to begin hitting the consciousness of Italian society with fists of reality. (..))1
The idea that we express in this step article is exactly what we want to prove. We propose to build an architecture that can be called realism Pop. Where you put together architecture and everyday objects, working on craft practices and become aware of a history in architecture. The idea is to rethink the value of architecture from the political consciousness of the quality of the materials also the poorest. Cover Rudolf Schindler, arte povera find objects of architecture and social places.
So we try to promote the use of materials that many consider not architectural (scaffolding, metal recovery, wooden rough boards) to obtain effects that are typical of a rich architecture. An architecture that does not work on the details but on the quality of places and wants to grow old with his wrinkles. We are opposed to those groups who see the use of poor materials the creation of a poor identity in contrast with the rich society. A comfortable model for social hierarchies. For us, poor people need to have a rich house built with little money and that should give the image of a happy life.
We do not think of reusing the garbage to give a place to those who have lost, on the outskirts of opulent societies, we do not think squares designed as slums. I knew the generation of my grandmother as a seamstress built kits and dresses with the old parachute abandoned by the Allies and was capable of do so. Neorealism was born using mostly materials expired left behind by reporter allies.
We believe that anyone who should appropriated a condition of life that identifies him as individuo collettivo (an expression which means that no one should feel isolated in his identity).
So we propose to build houses that want to imitate the shopping baskets but whose finishes and free space models make a new life for the poorer classes, which means they have to live with their social life higher than they now live with their means that you can build their villas to tree height and with modest cost (this project is actually designed to achieve a time of their life in the prisons, a place of encounter between fathers and sons, but the opportunity to work for we meant to build a house free plan that emerges as a beacon in the night). OR houses with walls are made with the remains of sheet metal, assembled randomly as though they were salvaged materials for houses intended for homeless but for the richness of the composition of metals and solar panels become colored houses to the comfortable, because we believe that there is a large aesthetic potential in houses assembled from recycled materials. We do not believe the architecture deliberately weak and poor and the rich collective sociologists with pants pierced by designers of success.
The main focus of our way of designing is to try to do everything at minimum cost. If you can build up a wall with plaster coarser using that (if you can lift the plaster is better). We believe that fishing memory in the tradition of a traditional culture and country and returning it in a post-industrial era (of the rural society we want to regain the strength ethics) can revive one country like Italy (Pier Paolo Pasolini had already noticed that Italy since the late70 ‘of the last century was changing genetically evolved in a direction that was losing its moral spirit. The moral force of Italy, has enabled her to earn a high state of life from scratch, ethical spiritis the individual will of a nation was the greatest cultural contribution of Italy to the progress of the world (neorealism, poor art, Castellani, Bonalumi, Manzoni and Burri, commedia all’italiana, tailors become designers, the brothers Castiglione etc).
